Play is the Language of Kids

“While words are the language of adults, play is the language of kids.”

My daughter Evie is turning 9 in a few weeks. And I am feeling nostalgic. Because of Inklings Baby I live in the world of babies and toddlers. But at home, its not the world of babies. Instead it's the world of running to sports and play practice, checking if library books were read and explaining why some friends might be mean because they are having a hard time right now.

I read this article from The Good Trade about kids and play and remembered how much fun we had but also how much we learned about each other when we were playing. How my son at 6 still has a hard time getting a question wrong in trivia pursuit (the kids version). Thats so Virgo of him. Or how Evie will give up her turn to keep the peace (we aren't self sacrificing in this generation). Playing Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza and the high of almost winning only to miss the pile slap. These moments are the hard lessons of the future. They build on top of each other; resilience, emotional regulation (sorta) and being able to keep it moving.

What games are you playing with your kids? We could always use more.
